A Mockumentary Retelling of Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo

Exposing Modern Parallels to Rizal's Masterpieces

BY THE MANILA CHRONICLE INVESTIGATIVE TEAM

On Christmas morning, 2016, the body of a woman known only as "Sisa" was discovered in Manila North Cemetery. What appeared to be a tragic case of poverty and mental illness would soon reveal a web of systematic injustice, corruption, and social inequality that echoes the very themes José Rizal chronicled over a century ago in his revolutionary novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.

This mockumentary traces the devastating journey of a mother torn apart by circumstances beyond her control: a husband consumed by online gambling addiction, sons caught in the violent crossfire of the drug war, and a justice system that fails the most vulnerable. From the Pork Barrel Scam that stole from the people to the extrajudicial killings that claimed innocent lives, the parallels to Rizal's critique of injustice in both Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo are striking and undeniable.

Through meticulous research and powerful storytelling, our team has reconstructed this modern tragedy, drawing direct lines between the characters of Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo and the real individuals suffering under today's broken systems. What emerges is not just a story of one family's destruction, but a damning indictment of a society that has failed to learn from its past.

The past is never dead. It's not even past. What Rizal warned us about continues to haunt our present.
